Wandelen tegen hematologische kanker.
In september en oktober 2025 loop ik de “Camino Portugues”, een pelgrimsroute vanaf de kathedraal van Lissabon in Portugal (Sé de Lisboa, zie foto) naar Santiago de Compostela in Spanje. Halverwege sla ik een stukje van de route over maar al met al wandel ik zo’n 580km in 34 etappes.

Ik maak deze wandeltocht ter nagedachtenis aan mijn moeder die leed aan myelofibrose, een kwaadaardige beenmergaandoening. Dit kwam aan het licht nadat ze een herseninfarct had gekregen. Een attente revalidatiearts bemerkte bij mijn moeder een vergrote milt en stuurde haar door naar het ziekenhuis. Mijn moeder was tijdens haar ziekte in toenemende mate vermoeid en had op een bepaald moment met enige regelmaat bloedtransfusies nodig. In februari 2024 overleed zij aan de gevolgen van acute (myeloïde) leukemie, 3 dagen na haar 80e verjaardag en “slechts” 5 weken nadat ze die diagnose kreeg.

Nog teveel mensen in Nederland en daarbuiten, ook kinderen, krijgen een vorm van hematologische kanker.
Stichting Hematon draagt bij aan informatievoorziening, belangenbehartiging en lotgenotencontact en is daarmee van groot belang voor mensen die lijden aan deze vorm van kanker. Met mijn wandeltocht zamel ik daarom geld in voor de Stichting Hematon. Elke bijdrage is welkom om de “best passende zorg” te kunnen bieden aan mensen met hematologische kanker. Doneer vandaag nog! I’m planning to walk the “Camino Portugues”, a pilgrimage route from the Lisbon Cathedral in Portugal (Sé de Lisboa, see photo) to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Halfway through I’ll skip a part of the route but overall I’ll be walking about 580km (360mi) in 34 stages.

I’m undertaking this walk in remembrance of my mother, who suffered from myelofibrosis, a malignant bone marrow disease. This was revealed after she had a cerebral infarct. An attentive doctor in the rehabilitation centre noticed that my mother had an enlarged spleen and referred her to the hospital for examination. During her illness, my mother became increasingly fatigued and at some point needed blood transfusions regularly. In February 2024 she passed away due to acute (myeloid) leukemia, 3 days after her 80th birthday and “only” 5 weeks after she got diagnosed.

Still too many people in the Netherlands and abroad, including children, are affected by a form of hematological cancer.
The “Hematon Foundation”, based in the Netherlands, is a patient advocacy group, provides information and offers peer support. It is of great importance to people with hematological cancer. By walking the “Camino Portugues” I’m therefore raising funds for the Hematon Foundation. Every contribution is welcome to help provide the “best care” for people with hematological cancer.
